What is the SPAR Program?

The Special Program of Assisted Reproduction (SPAR) is an international program introduced to protect Intended mothers, gestational surrogates, and infants from sexually transmitted diseases like HIV following fertility treatment where the Intended Father’s sperm is used to conceive a baby.

The SPAR program was introduced by Bedford Research Foundation Clinical Laboratory, which has assisted hundreds of families to conceive a child without transmitting infection. This program integrates sperm washing and semen testing for a safe fertility treatment leading to a successful pregnancy.

As per research, blood tests are not reliable to examine viruses in semen. Though, why aren’t blood tests reliable? The reason is organs that produce semen are affected by HIV infection and that isn’t detectable in a blood test. An Intended Father may have a negative blood test but have a high viral load in their semen, hence semen testing is a must.

How does the SPAR Program Work?

Once Intended Parents have consulted doctors and have been medically examined, then semen is tested to check for HIV infection. This program involves a PCR test to determine the viral load in semen. This test detects free virus particles (HIV RNA) and virus-infected cells (HIV proviral DNA).

After examination, a semen specimen that does not include any HIV virus is then washed using the sperm using technique. The sperm is segregated from semen fluids by using a centrifuge and placed in a solution. HIV is not present in entire sperm but in semen particles, hence this technique aids in preparing a semen specimen ready to go further for fertility treatment.

To begin with the process, Intended parents consult with our experts and doctors, then the Intended Father is evaluated and screened to check his health condition, duration of infection, current antiviral therapy, and other infections. Our IVF specialists educate Intended Parents about the entire process and they can further ask their doubts. Also, we facilitate the best fertility clinics for an optimal IVF procedure.

Egg donation for HIV+ Intended Couples

Using a healthy donor for Intended Parents with HIV infection simplifies their journey of surrogacy and the IVF process. Furthermore, we combine a healthy sperm that has undergone sperm washing technique with qualitative eggs to create an embryo. Meanwhile, screening is performed with a healthy surrogate mother. After evaluation, an embryo transfer procedure is conducted, and then a gestational surrogate carries your baby like in any other surrogacy program.

Global Star Surrogacy, shortlists the best woman for egg donation and selection of surrogate mothers. With our best network, we ensure to facilitate a perfect surrogate and egg donor. We screen every woman and further examine a few factors like:

  • Background and cultural check.
  • Their compensation.
  • Family medical history.
  • Previous experience in donating eggs and giving birth to a child.
  • Their lifestyle.

We further assist our Intended Parents in selecting appropriate surrogate and donor matches. We are a full-service surrogacy agency, dedicated to making a daunting process as simple and stress-free as possible.

How Safe is this Surrogacy Program?

The risk with this procedure (the SPAR program technique) is unlikely that a surrogate or an intended mother and a child would be affected by HIV transmission. The sperm washing technique is safer and more reliable than any other than pregnancy from unprotected intercourse or untested sperm specimens. As per research, since 1998, there might be very rare cases with the consequence of failure in conceiving a negative HIV baby, or else this program has facilitated a safe process and fulfilled the dream of progenitorship.

Although there are certain risks associated with surrogacy with HIV+ Parents, it can be taken care of. Your IVF Specialists will educate you regarding the process and precautions. Even though the sperm washing technique assures a safe and healthy process, it has some protocols to protect the surrogate or Intended mother and your child. The precaution involves HIV antibody testing at 3 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months after every attempt of pregnancy.
